Weymouth Students Score Below Average On MCAS
Weymouth students scored below the state average on this year's MCAS, except in third-, fourth- and 10th-grade English.
WEYMOUTH, MA — Massachusetts has released results of the latest MCAS test, which is used by the state as a guide to measure students' academic performance. Weymouth School District students performed slightly below the state average this year, except in 10th-grade English. Other individual grade levels exceeded the state average in some subjects.
In 10th-grade English, 63 percent of Weymouth students met or exceeded expectations on the test, which is slightly above the state average of 61 percent. In math, though, 50 percent of 10th-graders met or exceeded expectations, while the state average was 59 percent. In science, 73 percent of them showed proficiency, slightly below the 74-percent state average.
When it comes to third- through eighth-graders, test scores district-wide were below the state average — 48 percent of Weymouth students at least met expectations, compared to the 52-percent state average, and 43 percent met expectations in math, compared to the 49-percent state average. In science, 40 percent of Weymouth's fifth- and eighth-grade students met or exceeded expectations, while the state average was 48 percent.

Despite the overall results being lower than the state average, Weymouth third- and fourth-graders exceeded the state average in English this year, according to the results released Tuesday. Students also scored the same as the state average in third-grade math and sixth-grade English.
