MA Weather Forecast: First Snow On Tap As 2 Storms Threaten

The forecasts vary from a light dusting to a 'blanketing' of heavy snow.

Meteorologists have been eyeing this weekend as a possibility for the first real snowfall of the season. Forecasters are now warning of back-to-back storms that could threaten Southern New England, with two unlikely scenarios showing Boston blanketed in heavy snow.

Here's the important stuff: The snowfall won't likely be much more than a couple of inches, and the possibility of even that is less than 50 percent. AccuWeather is reporting it's possible we may see heavy snow falling across interior New England, but the odds of that still seem remote for now.

The National Weather Service released its most specific weekend snow forecast yet this season, with the caveat that there is still a lot of uncertainty and it's likely to change. Scroll to the bottom of this story to see the map that shows it in all its glory.

On average, there is about a 20 percent chance that parts of Massachusetts will see more than 2 inches of snow this weekend. That number increases to 30 percent for the southeastern part of the state and drops a bit for Central Mass. And for those folks who live on the Cape? The tip of the Cape isn't expected to see any snow (sorry).

WBZ has a similar forecast, which you can also see below.

The first storm

The storm threatening to bring the heaviest serious snow to Massachusetts is supposed to start in the south and make its way up the mid-Atlantic Friday night and land Saturday. If the storm's northern edges make it high enough, the cold air in Southern New England will mean some sort of wintry mix, or even snow. Southeastern Mass. is at the highest risk for this.

AccuWeather says the temperatures will be well below freezing Saturday and Sunday, thanks to a blast of arctic air.

It could get worse, though. AccuWeather says, "if the storm is stronger and tracks farther west" then a "swatch of heavy snow [would] blanket the interior Northeast and parts of the Interstate 95 corridor, including ... Boston."

The second storm

On the heels of that first storm, the second storm will likely bring very light, patchy snow from Saturday night into Sunday. But if Atlantic Ocean moisture remains by the time this storm arrives, AccuWeather says it could "cause some trouble."

With all the varying reports from different news outlets, one thing is clear: The uncertain forecast will firm up over the next 48 hours. Stick with Patch as we bring you up-to-date changes for your community.
