WINCHESTER, MA — A police officer shot and killed a 35-year-old man in his apartment on Swanton Street Monday night, according to the Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Winchester Chief of Police Peter MacDonnell.

Police fatally shot Thomas Celona, 35, a resident of Parkview Apartments in Winchester.

Just after 8 p.m., a security guard at the Parkview Apartments called police to relay that a resident in the building had reported an "issue within his unit."

Three Winchester police officers arrived at the building and later told investigators they heard noise coming from inside the apartment, but did not see signs of forced entry. When they went inside, police said they found the man brandishing two knives.

Police said they told the man to drop the knives then used a stun gun on him twice, which didn't subdue him, according to the district attorney's office. The man reportedly continued to approach the officers with knives still in hand.

That's when one of the Winchester police officers shot the man, authorities said. He later died at the hospital.

The district attorney's office did not release the man's name, nor the nature of the issue that initially led police to be called.

The three officers were placed on paid administrative leave, per the policy of their department.
