The Call To The Mound: Tyler Beede Moves To The Majors

We've been watching pitcher Tyler Beede moving up since high school. Tuesday, he takes the mound for the San Francisco Giants.

AUBURN, MA—It's the call the family's been waiting for not only since he was drafted into the minors, but basically since Tyler Beede was clearly a standout on the mound way back to Little League.

Beede, an Auburn native and Vanderbilt alumnus, on Monday got the call that he was moving up in the San Francisco Giants ball club. He's officially making his major league debut on Tuesday night in the second game of the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Beede's family started to leak out the news, and bursting excitement, on social media before the official announcement late last night.

"The call my family has been waiting for has arrived!" wrote mom Cheryl Rivers. "Tyler will take the ball and make his MLB debut for the SF Giants in San Francisco."

"While every fiber of my being hopes and prays that Tyler has a long career, I know that being there, in that moment as a parent, to see that is worth more than money more than any material item in the world," wrote Tyler's dad Walter Beede. "I want to thank everyone for putting up with years of baseball related posts, all of my musical selections and hope you all get to tune in."

The Giants' initial motivation for summoning Beede was to keep the rotation's other starters on their regular four days' rest, according to the announcement from Major League Baseball.

Beede, 24, was San Francisco's No. 1 selection in the 2014 Draft (14th overall). Due to inclement weather in Tacoma, where Sacramento opened its season, the Giants sent Beede to join Class A Advanced San Jose to prevent him from getting too much rest, said the announcement. MLB Pipeline ranked Beede fourth among the organization's top 30 prospects.
