Central Mass. Under Frost Advisory: National Weather Service

Frost is good for killing mosquitoes, but very bad for outdoor plants and vegetable gardens. See the details on when frost hits.

WORCESTER, MA — The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for much of central Massachusetts west of Norwood. That means outdoor plants and vegetables are in danger of getting damaged.

The advisory takes effect at 2 a.m. Saturday as temperatures plummet to the mid-30s. The advisory ends on Saturday at 8 a.m. The NWS advises locals to cover any outdoor plants.

Tonight's chill will not be a "hard frost," however. That's when the ground and air reach freezing temperatures. Health officials say the danger of mosquitoes carrying Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) will remain until at least the first hard frost. That typically happens in November in New England.
