MA Native Among The 157 Killed In Ethiopian Airlines Plane Crash

The 24-year-old woman graduated from UMass in 2015, a family member told The Boston Globe.

SHEFFIELD, MA — A 24-year-old who grew up Western Mass. and graduated from the University of Massachusetts was among the 157 people killed in the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed Sunday, a family member told The Boston Globe.

Samya Stumo grew up in Sheffield and graduated from UMass in 2015. She was the great-niece of Ralph Nader.

According to her LinkedIn, Stumo was active in health systems research. She helds BAs in anthropology and Spanish from UMass, and an MSc in global health from the University of Copenhagen.

The Boeing 737 crashed Sunday minutes after taking off from Ethiopia. It was the second crash by the specific type of plane - the 737 Max 8 - in five months.
