Man Shot By Police In Auburn Has Died

A man who was shot in the parking lot of a Shell station in Auburn on Wednesday has died from his injuries.

AUBURN, MA—An armed New Hampshire man who was shot by Auburn police officers yesterday has died, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Joseph Loughery, 59, of Dublin, NH, was shot by police after he ignored repeated commands by the officers to disarm.

Earlier Wednesday, police were on the lookout for a truck with New Hampshire license plates. An officer found the truck in the Auburn Shell Station on Swanson Road in Auburn. At 1:15 p.m., officers walked up to Loughery's truck, where he sat in the parking area toward the back near the air pumps at 380 Southbridge St.

Loughery held a sawed-off .22-caliber rifle and moved his arms while officers shouted for him to disarm. Witnesses heard and video captured the officers repeatedly shouting, “drop the gun,” “don’t do it” and “let us help you.” The officers were not injured.

Loughery was transported to the UMass Memorial Medical in Worcester where he was later pronounced dead.

A relative of Loughery had called Dublin Police at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday requesting a welfare check on Loughery, and told police that Loughery was missing. Using a cell phone app, the relative was able to track the vehicle to Auburn. Auburn Police were notified to be on the lookout for the pickup truck.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave based on department policy while the investigation continues.
