WORCESTER, MA — It’s a gray afternoon across the region, and feels just a bit darker after news that a bright light in local entertainment has gone out for good.

On Monday night, the owners of the Skylite Roller Skating Center in Worcester announced that the rink was closing for good. Skylite opened in 1981, hosting countless birthday parties, and slinging perhaps millions of slices of pizza. It was one of the last remaining roller rinks in the state.

Skylite is just the latest in a cascade of beloved business closing in Massachusetts, from restaurants and garden centers to the venerable Boston rock club Great Scott.
