WORCESTER, MA — The National Weather Service has issued a storm warning for much of Massachusetts as Tropical Storm Isaias takes aim at the state, bringing the potential for flooding, tornadoes, and strong wind gusts to an area stretching from Boston to Pittsfield.

Forecasts indicate Isaias will roll through the state beginning early Tuesday afternoon. The main storm track through the state is in an area between Springfield and the New York border — but eastern parts of the state will be affected by the storm too.

Milford and Worcester are well east of the predicted storm track, but could see wind gusts between 50 and 73 mph, plus rainfall between 1 and 3 inches, according to the weather service. Farther east, central Middlesex County — including Marlborough and Framingham — could see gusts up to 57 mph, plus heavy similar rain amounts.

On Monday evening, Worcester officials announced that all outdoor parks facilities would be closed Tuesday due to Isaias.

The National Weather Service has also said that there is a "somewhat favorable" chance of tornado outbreaks during the storm. That warning covers a large area from Boston to Springfield.

The storm will linger in the area for about six hours Tuesday afternoon, and may impact the evening rush hour, according to forecasts.

"Strong southerly winds gusting to 40 to 60 mph may be capable of downing some trees and power lines," the National Weather Service said in a hurricane statement on Monday. "There is also the possibility of an isolated tornado. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with the higher totals closer to the Berkshires, where minor urban or poor drainage flooding may occur."

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency was warning local residents to prepare for the storm by securing outdoor objects like patio furniture and trash cans. MEMA is also urging residents to be prepared for possible power outages during the storm. You can check for outages near you on the statewide map.
