Worcester Election Also Includes A Vote For Baseball Team Name

Woo Sox or the Worcester Red Sox? You can vote on this at the polls.

WORCESTER, MA—Tuesday is Election Day, of course. And across the country, we're electing senators, representatives, governors and other legislators. But in Worcester, we're also voting for the name of our new baseball team.

That's right. In Worcester, residents can help vote in a new name for the Triple-A affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, who move to Worcester in 2021.

The team and more than 20 Assumption College students are getting together in a citywide market research project centered around the new team. This organization, made up of business students, are going to manage five ballot locations across the city at which people can cast their vote for the new team. What'll it be? Woo Sox? The Worcester Red Sox?

The collaboration is one of the first of many between the Worcester Red Sox and the school, and is considered an exclusive higher education sponsor and of the team's 21 founding partners.

After rumors and much anticipation, the city in mid august announced that along with the Pawtucket Red Sox and Triple-A Baseball Organization, it had signed a letter of intent to build a modern multi-use baseball park as part of a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the former Wyman Gordon site in the canal district. The park is part of a complete redesign of Kelley Square.

The project is anticipated to be completed by March of 2021, and the project would consist of approximately 18 acres of development with 250 market rate apartments, a 150-room hotel, a second boutique hotel and restaurants. It also includes improvements to streets, sidewalks and parking lots.
