WORCESTER, MA — Opening day for the Worcester Red Sox has been pushed back to mid-May, but Polar Park will be ready to welcome fans when the gates finally open.

The Worcester License Commission on Thursday morning approved plans for non-baseball activities at the park including alcohol sales and entertainment.

The company Professional Sports Catering was granted a liquor license to sell beer, wine and liquor at more than a dozen locations around the park. The company is the alcohol provider for minor league teams in Hartford, Frederick, Va., and Medlar Field, where the Penn State University basebally team plays.

The commission granted the Worcester Red Sox an all-purpose entertainment license, including for concerts on the field. Polar Park will have an entertainment cut off time of 11 p.m., except for any baseball games that might go past that time.

The WooSox on Wednesday announced opening day would be pushed from April 13 to May 11. That's due to Major League Baseball shifting the start of the Triple-A season due to the pandemic. Polar Park will only be allowed to open at 12 percent capacity under the state's coronavirus reopening plan. Polar Park has a capacity of about 9,500, meaning a maximum capacity of 1,140 on opening day.
