WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Red Sox certainly had plenty of suggestions. According to team president Dr. Charles Steinberg, over 1,000 people submitted some 218 nickname suggestions for the new team over the last year.

The Dirt Dogs. The Gritty Kittys. The Holy Sox. Even the Worcester Worcesters.

But there was one nickname that's been around since 2018 — when the owners revealed the team would move from Pawtucket — that seemed to stick.

"Who beats the WooSox?" Steinberg asked a crowd gathered at the Mercantile Center on Monday night.

The team's official name will be the Worcester Red Sox — but the officials nickname will be WooSox, Steinberg said at an unveiling ceremony on Monday. The team also unveiled a new logo — a smiley holding a baseball bat and wearing ruby-red socks, a nod to Worcester artist Harvey Ball's 1960s icon.

The team will take the field in April 2021 at the under-construction Polar Park near Kelley Square. The team has been located in Pawtucket for nearly 50 years, but Worcester lured the team with a new $100 million stadium.

Construction on Polar Park began in July. The ball park development will also include mixed-use buildings and a new city parking garage. Architects Larry Lucchino Janet Marie Smith designed the development — they were also behind the recent $285 million renovation of Fenway Park.

And although you won't be able to see the WooSox until 2021, you can buy the team's gear. Steinberg also announced the opening of a WooSox store on Monday night.
