Uber Driver Accused Of Raping Passenger In Wrentham

Police said a woman was raped by her Uber driver after she requested a ride home from a function in Franklin.

WRENTHAM, MA — An Uber driver was arrested last week after driving a woman to Wrentham and raping her, according to police. Melvin Guerrero-Encarna, 33, of Lynn, is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Wrentham District Court.

Around 2:20 a.m., on April 29, the woman requested an Uber after attending a function in Franklin. According to police, Guerro-Encarca pulled over along a quiet road in Wrentham and sexually assaulted his passenger.

Police said following the assault, the woman went to a friend's house before going to a local hospital for treatment. Police were notified by hospital staff and began an investigation.

When speaking with officers, the woman complained of soreness and had bruises all over her body, police told WHDH news. Police said she struggled to clearly recall the entire incident.

Following the investigation, Wrentham Police obtained an arrest warrant and arrested Guerro-Encarca. He is being held without bail.

"We recommend the public exercise caution when utilizing any ride services, especially where unmarked and inconspicuous vehicles are involved," Police Chief Bill McGrath said in a statement. "Unmarked vehicles of this type blend easily with their surrounding, unlike marked taxi cabs and buses that stand out. The safest practice, especially for women, is to ride in groups and to review the safety protocols in place by the ride service."
