3 More Michigan Kmart Stores To Close As Sears Looks To Reduce Losses
The retailer has seen its sales continue to decline as more customers shop online.

BAY CITY, MI — Three more Sears-owned Kmart stores in Michigan will close this year as the retailer continues to decrease the number of stores it has nationwide. On Thursday, Sears Holding Corp., which owns Kmart, announced it would close 28 more Kmart stores. The retailer announced earlier this year that 180 Kmart across the nation would close.
In Michigan, the Kmart stores in Bay City, Sandusky and Utica are among those now scheduled to be closed. The retailer has seen in-store sales decline as more customers turn to Amazon and other online retailers for their shopping.
The company reported that sales at stores open for at least a year fell 11.5 percent in the second quarter ended July 29. Total revenue fell 22 percent to $4.37 billion, mainly due to store closures, which shaved off $770 million of revenue, the company said.
All but one store will close by mid-November, Sears said. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Cleveland. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)
