MICHIGAN— A new Old Navy might be coming to a location near you, as the clothing retailer plans to open 800 more stores in the United States. The move is part of the preparation for the clothing retailer’s split from Gap Inc., its parent company.

Gap announced earlier this month that it would separate the hugely successful Old Navy brand from the rest of its business, as Old Navy now exceeds the original brand in sales. Gap will lose Old Navy, but the longtime company will continue to run Banana Republic, Athleta, Intermix, and the athletic brand Hill City.

“We determined that pursuing a separation is the most compelling path forward for our brands — creating two separate companies with distinct financial profiles, tailored operating priorities and unique capital allocation strategies,” said Robert Fisher, Gap Inc.’s board chairman.

Information on the exact locations of these new Old Navy stores hasn’t yet been released, but Michigan already serves as a home for 26 stores.

Old Navy announced it wanted to focus its new stores in mostly smaller, underserved markets. There’s no specific timeline on the upcoming openings, but the retailer did open 145 stores between 2016 and 2018, according to the company.

Old Navy CEO Sonia Syngal will remain in charge of the soon-to-be separated company, which generated almost half of Gap Inc.’s 16.6 billion in sales in 2018.
