Olympic Hockey: Women Win Gold In Dramatic Fashion

Michigan's Megan Keller saw lots of ice time – and a long 2 minutes in the penalty box.

A 20-year gold medal drought for women's Olympic hockey is over. In dramatic fashion, Team USA defeated arch nemesis Canada in a shootout victory Thursday in PyeongChang.

The U.S. women won, 3-2, after finishing regulation – and overtime – knotted up at 2-2. In the shootout, Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored, what is now known as the "Oops, I did it again" shot. The complicated move worked to perfection in the sixth round of the sudden death shootout and put Team USA ahead.

It's the first time the U.S. women's team won gold since 1998, when they defeated Team Canada. Since then, Canada has won four Olympic gold medals in women's ice hockey.

For Team USA, Michigan native, Megan Keller, a defensive player from Farmington Hills, saw extensive time – 29-plus minutes – on the ice in regulation and overtime. But, for the shootout that ended the game, Keller spent that time alone – in the penalty box.

Keller was called for an illegal hit in the final minutes of overtime. She was dispatched to the penalty box for 2 minutes, from where she watched the shootout.

After U.S. goalie Maddie Rooney successfully defended against the penalty shot from Team Canada, solidifying Team USA's gold medal win, Keller escaped the box and joined her teammates celebrating on the ice.

She told the Detroit News:

“Words can’t even describe it,” Keller said. “I’m so proud of this team and anybody who has represented us. We are here because of everyone who has contributed along the way. I couldn’t be more excited and happy to be bringing home the gold with the rest of my teammates.”
