Police Find More Devices At Newaygo Home After School Explosion

According to police a 16-year-old student accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device he brought into school.

NEWAYGO, MI – Officials are investigating after a student accidentally detonated an explosive device at a Newaygo school Monday.

On Monday morning just before 9 a.m., Newaygo Police were dispatched to the Newaygo High School for a report of an explosion inside a classroom.

According to an update thread on the Michigan State Police Twitter account, a 16-year-old student accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device he brought into school, injuring himself and four other students.

The 16-year-old was transported to a local hospital for moderate-severe injuries. The other four students were brought to the hospital by their parents for treatment of minor injuries. The teacher who was in the classroom also sought treatment at the hospital.

The school was immediately evacuated and students were transferred to the bus garage, police said.

All Newaygo County Schools subsequently went into lockdown until it was determined there was no threat.

Police continue to investigate what kind of material was involved in the explosion.

The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were on the scene to assist with identifying the materials.

Michigan State Police said troopers executed a search warrant at a home on Newaygo County. Additional explosive devices were found at the home Monday night and were safely detonated by the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad.
