Niche's safest school rankings are based several factors, though the most significant weight – 50 percent– is put on surveys on health and safety by students and parents. The web site also weighed student absenteeism, in- and out-of-school suspensions, law enforcement referrals, and school related arrests.

The reviews of Birmingham schools were mostly glowing for the district of nearly 8,200 students.

The school district's low mark, a B- for diversity, is indicative of the district racial makeup: Nearly 80 percent of the students are white and 11.3 percent of the students are African-American.

The Troy schools also got high marks – mostly As and A+s across the various categories the districts are ranked on. However, Troy schools did receive an A for diversity, where 32 percent of the student population is Asian and 56.7 percent is white. The district has 12,502 students.
