Safety City U.S.A. to Host Children's Summer Camp Program

Safety City U.S.A., the first nonprofit, injury prevention/safety education center in Michigan, is hosting a summer camp program for children ages 6-9 in Royal Oak.

Three one-week camp sessions are available. Each session runs Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and is $125 per camper. The camp fee includes all activities, a T-shirt and a daily snack.

Camp programs will include fire, water, bike, police and animal safety. A “police day” will address stranger danger, Internet safety and bullying. An “animal safety day” will take place at the Detroit Zoo. All activities are led by health care professionals from Beaumont Health System, as well as fire/police personnel and trained volunteers.

  • June 25 - 29 (Session 1)
  • July 16 - 20 (Session 2)
  • Aug. 20 - 24 (Session 3)

“It’s great to combine a week of fun with potentially life-saving lessons,” says Donna Bucciarelli, R.N., trauma prevention coordinator, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and program manager, Safety City U.S.A.

The year-round, safety center in Royal Oak is an injury prevention education program of Beaumont’s Level I Trauma Center.  The emphasis is on “hands-on” safety education to reduce injuries and save lives.

While most of the safety education activities at Safety City U.S.A. are aimed at school children ages 5-12, afternoon and evening programs are also offered to teens, parents and seniors living in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

According to the National Safety Council, preventable injuries send 27 million Americans to hospital emergency centers each year. Unintentional injury remains the No. 1 killer of children ages 1-14 in the United States.

Safety City U.S.A. is in the Northwood Shopping Center at 30955 N. Woodward Ave. (at 13 Mile Road) in Royal Oak. The center includes replicas of a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and family room.  It also includes an indoor park setting.
