Berkley Offers Property Owners Chance To Dispute Taxes

Berkley residents who want to dispute property tax assessments can schedule an appointment with the board of review next week.

City of Berkley property taxpayers who have questions or want to dispute their assessments can schedule a Board of Review appointment for next week, the city announced via Twitter. The board will meet with taxpayers on March 6, 8, 12 and 13. Meetings must be scheduled in advance and before March 2, and can be made by calling toll free at (888) 350-0900, extension 54401, or at (248) 975-4401.

According to an announcement provided by Berkley Interim Finance Director John Pepperman, the tentative equalization multiplier and State equalization value factor is 1.00. The city advises taxpayers who bought a home in the area after June 1, 2017 that they’ll need to file an affidavit by June 1 if they want to claim the principal residence exemption.

The Board of Review will also consider poverty exemption requests, which can mean the difference between owing the city money and potentially losing a home to foreclosure, or finding a solution that helps both the homeowner and the city. Homeowners who can’t make it to any of the available appointment times can appeal by letter to the Board of Review as long as the written appeal is received by March 13.
