Berkley Schools Cancel Evening Activities Amid Snow Emergency
Much Of Michigan Under Winter Storm Warning

With snow still falling at a heavy clip, the National Weather Service has declared a winter storm warning for much of the area today. Heavy snowfall yesterday and today led Wayne County to declare a snow emergency, and Wayne State cancelled classes and evening activities today, starting at 2 pm. With expected snowfall of 5 to 8 inches Wednesday, officials have warned local motorists not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
Snow is still falling heavily in Berkley and Huntington Woods this afternoon, and the National Weather Service reports that the rate of snowfall areawide will “exceed 1 inch per hour between 3pm and 7pm and will occasionally reach 2 inches per hour.” The winter storm warning is in effect for many Michigan counties, including Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne.
According to the Berkley Public Schools, “All after-school activities for today, Wed, Dec 13, 2017, have been canceled. The school day will continue and dismiss as scheduled.” They add that this includes “athletic events/practices, meetings, community ed programs and outside facility rentals,” adding that “Kids' Zone Latchkey will continue as normal this evening.” The superintendent’s office has made no announcement yet regarding any school closings or delays for tomorrow, but the district makes its decision no later than 5 am when there’s inclement weather, and will post information to its main website and to the schools' Twitter feedas well as making it available to hundreds of local media outlets.
