Chemistry Salon Now Open

Chemistry Salon has officially opened introducing beauty enthusiasts to the city’s newest hair salon located at 2785 12 Mile Road in Berkley, Michigan.

Located in the former Berkley Transmission shop, Chemistry Salon is a full-service hair salon for men and women. The salon’s tagline “where relationships bond with beauty” helps to reinforce the company’s commitment to offering a one-of-a-kind experience for its customers.

The inside of the salon was designed by owners Morgan and Ken Kruizenga, with the idea of taking something considered an eye sore in the community and turning it into something beautiful. They loved the industrial style transmission shop with large square windows and updated it to have a mid-century, modern feel. “As soon as we found the property, we knew we wanted it and we had such a great vision for what it could really be,” said owner, Morgan Kruizenga. “It was last year around Mother’s Day when we purchased it and one of my friends referenced that I just adopted a green little baby. We got the construction done and opened in 10 ½ months!”

Chemistry Salon is committed to being environmentally friendly, recycling 95% of all waste including hair – they are only one of 15 salons in Michigan that are currently doing this through Green Circle Salons. They also only use sustainable, cruelty-free, plant-based products that are hair and fashion industry leaders such as Davines. “In that process of becoming sustainable, I learned from Green Circle Salons that North American salons generate over 214,814 pounds of salon waste daily, I knew we needed to implement a smart recycling program so we could make a difference too,” said Kruizenga. The hair Chemistry Salon recycles is used to make hair booms that help clean oil spills in oceans, seaways and rivers. Even the highlighting foils are recycled.

With more than 30 years in the industry, Kruizenga is an expert in her craft and has a strong background in education and training. In addition to holding several team leadership and educator positions at various local salons, she also previously worked as an art director and regional art director for Toni & Guy where she taught classes locally and nationally. She’s studied with many world-renowned beauty companies including Aveda, Davines, Bumble & Bumble, Sebastian, Vidal Sassoon, Zgat, Mahogany, and L’Oréal to name a few.

The salon features environmentally friendly construction including radiant flooring – which uses less gas by heating water to maintain heat and cuts the heating bill in half. Kruizenga wanted her salon to be very comfortable for her customers in both summer and winter so she really paid attention to the best way to heat and cool the place and is constantly bringing in fresh air with four ventilation units throughout the building. “It was really important to me to have smart technology with the build out process of Chemistry Salon,” said Kruizenga. “The technology is out there. It’s not only better for the environment, but better for you, me, our children and the world.”

All the wood from around the mirrors, the hostess desk and color bar are made from repurposed wood from Live Edge Detroit. The salon’s trim/baseboard is recycled cardboard and the cabinets are made from composite material of recycled wood and plastics and is really durable. From the furniture to the décor, the salon was designed to make clients feel like they are at home and stylists are in a creative house.
