Gubernatorial Candidate To Speak At Town Hall

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed Will Take Questions From The Crowd

Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:00 PM, Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will address the Oak Park-Huntington Woods Democratic Club. El-Sayed, former health commissioner for the City of Detroit, will speak at the group’s monthly meeting, which is open to the public and will be presented as a town hall.

El-Sayed, 33, has a very deep resume. Born and raised in Michigan to parents who emigrated from Egypt, El-Sayed attended Michigan public schools where he captained high school football, wrestling, and lacrosse teams. A University of Michigan graduate and Rhodes Scholar, El-Sayed holds a doctorate from Oxford University and completed medical school at Columbia. At 30, El-Sayed became the youngest health official for a major US city, helping to reorganize a public health department that had been privatized after Detroit’s bankruptcy in 2013.

El-Sayed has already visited 100 cities and 50 counties in the state, according to his campaign. ”We’re sharing conversations about the challenges facing the state - emergency management, lead poisoning, and crumbling public schools,” El-Sayed said. “As health director, I rebuilt Detroit's Health Department around the well-being of its real people, providing glasses to children, fighting polluters (and winning), and making sure schools were safe and healthy. I am honored to have this opportunity to learn from folks in Oak Park about the issues we are facing as a state and discuss what we’ll do about them,” he added.
