Oakland Community Health Network Recognizes Men’s Health Week

June is designated around the world as Men’s Health Month and Monday June 12, 2017 is the start of Men’s Health Week. During this week-long event, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) will use a social media campaign to promote men’s mental health awareness.

The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and
encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. The annual campaign is credited
with the increase in wellness activities for boys and men around the world, resulting in better health outcomes and longer life expectancy.

In recognition of men’s health as a growing priority internationally, June 16, 2017 is designated as Wear
BLUE Day. Wear BLUE Day is celebrated by private corporations, government agencies, sports teams, and
individuals to show their concern for the health and wellbeing of boys and men.

“Men’s Health Week gives us an opportunity to focus on the health and well-being of boys, men, and their
families,” said OCHN Executive Director and CEO, Willie Brooks. “Our hope is to encourage men and boys
to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for mental health.”
Depression is one of the leading causes of disease or injury worldwide for both men and women. However,
men have a higher suicide death rate than women and are more likely to suffer from physical or emotional
tension due to stress and anxiety.
