5 Events to Mark on the October Calendar in Birmingham

From an art show and a big football game to Halloween fun, October has a lot to offer residents of the Birmingham area.

October is here, and though one 'holiday' gets the majority of attention, there's still plenty happening in Birmingham before Halloween. Here are some highlights:

Our Town Art Show, Oct. 11-12

The 28th Annual Our Town Art Show and Sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 and 12 at the Community House, 380 South Bates St. The show is free and open to the public. The event will showcase more than 300 pieces of artwork from 167 artists, and will award $10,000 in prize money to Michigan artists. 

Fire Department Open House, Oct. 12

Birmingham Fire Department will showcase it's personnel, training and equipment while teaching the community about fire safety durin their annua open house on Oct. 12.

From 1-4 p.m., residents can visit the Birmingham Fire Department - Adams St. Station and participate in hands-on activities for children and adults, fire demonstrations and take a peek at the Beaumont One helicopter. This year's event takes on special meaning as the department celebrates its 100th anniversary. 


Battle for Birmingham, Oct. 18

Both of Birmingham’s high school football teams Groves and Seaholm, currently undefeated, will face each other in the only matchup of the season at 7 p.m., Oct.  As if bragging rights and positioning for the OAA Blue League weren’t enough, the game is also Seaholm’s homecoming.    


Pumpkin Patch and Halloween Parade, Oct. 20

Dress your kids up in their Halloween costumes and head out the 20th Annual Pumpkin Patch for family fun at the Community House terrace and Merrill Street. From 1-4 p.m., kids can participate in several activities, and enjoy snacks and live entertainment for free, courtesy of the Junior League of Birmingham and The Community House. The parade, sponsored by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, begins at 4 p.m.


Rail Rally, Oct. 23

Celebrate and explore the new and long-standing businesses in Birmingham's Rail District at a 'Rail Rally' hosted by local businesses and the the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce. Participants can join the fun in teams of four, or can join a team at check-in, beginning at 3 p.m. Visit the chamber website for more information.
