5 Ways To Deter Deer From Your Property in Birmingham

Residents reported multiple deer sightings recently, prompting the city of Birmingham to issue these tips for those concerned about their property.

The city of Birmingham recently released several tips to help residents deter deer from affecting their property after a number of recent reported sightings.  The information was compiled with the help of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which plans to create an urban management plan regarding deer in the near future. See the city's website for more information.

Change the Habitat: If deer are frequent unwanted visitors, consider modifying the landscape, as they avoid areas without cover. Careful plant selection for home and business landscapes can also help minimize damage due to deer browsing and make areas less attractive to them.

Do Away with Fruit:  Deer love to eat the fruit from trees. It's recommended to remove fruit like apples from the ground as soon as they fall.

Don't Feed Them: Feeding deer is prohibited in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It also attracts them to unwanted areas, particularly during the winter.

Motion Sensors: Installing motion detectors and corresponding lighting may startle deer that get too close to home.
