Country Day Girls Come Out on Top in District Basketball Final

The postseason may have just started, but Birmingham's high school basketball teams are already making a big statement on the hardwood.

Country Day moves on to regionals

The girls from the Detroit Country Day are celebrating this weekend after taking home the Class B district title Friday night.

According to MLive, the lady Yellowjackets ran past Macomb Lutheran North, defeating them 43-26. Junior Brittney Washington led Country Day in scoring with 16 points.

The Yellowjackets are no stranger to the spotlight. A regular in the girls basketball postseason, Country Day has made it to the MHSAA quarterfinals two years in a row now — both times they were defeated by Goodrich.

Now with a 12-0 record this season, Country Day will face Detroit Osborn in the first round of the MHSAA regional tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday at West Bloomfield.

Roeper defeated by state champs in districts

The girls from the Roeper Upper School, meanwhile, weren't so lucky though they ended up giving some state champions a run for their money.

The lady Roughriders lost their district final game Friday to Class D state champion Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 44-40.

Still, MIPrepZone notes that with two seniors graduating this spring, the prospect for Roeper is bright. “I think we’ll gain a lot of confidence and experience,” Roeper coach Ernie Righetti said.

Groves takes home OAA gold title

The boys postseason officially begins next week, yet Birmingham is already looking good going into into the tournament.

The boys team from Groves High School scored a big win Thursday night to win a piece of the Oakland Actitivities Association (OAA) gold division title.

According MIPrepZone, Groves now shares the first-place ranking with Stoney Creek, both with 8-2 records in the gold division.

To win a piece of the title, however, the Falcons had to beat Stoney Creek on Thursday night — a difficult task after Stoney Creek first beat Groves on Feb. 1.

However, MIPrepZone notes that Groves senior Kyle Ervin finished the game with 20 points while junior Eddie Reese scored 18 points — leading Groves to a narrow victory at home.

Looking ahead to next week, the MHSAA boys basketball tournament begins in earnest, with districts starting Monday. Groves will be the host for the first round, playing the winner of Monday's game between Southfield Lathrup and Royal Oak on Wednesday.

Other boys teams in Birmingham include:

• Seaholm High School will face Andover Monday. The winner will play Orchard Lake St. Mary's on Wednesday.
• Detroit Country Day faces Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Monday. The winner will play Madison Heights Lamphere Wednesday.
• Roeper will host in the first round as well, playing Auburn Hills Christian on Monday. The winner will play Warren Macomb Christian on Wednesday.
