Beverly Elementary Students Love Cereal, But Don't Mind Giving It Up
The Gleaners Community Food Bank has a need for cereal donations to help keep children fed during the summer months. Today's the last day to help them, Patch and the DMC in a virtual food drive.
It wasn't necessarily easy, but cereal-loving students at Beverly Elementary School managed to walk by the growing collection of cereal boxes in the school's main hallway, resisting temptation for weeks because they had the less fortunate in mind.
And it paid off. The school's 378 students collected 461 boxes of cereal over two weeks to help stock the shelves at the Gleaners Community Food Bank for the summer months. They surpassed the other eight elementary schools, Covington and Wee Care that participated in the third annual 'Cereal Food Fight' Against Hunger.
"It was fun, and this is a great way to help get food to kids that don't always have it, which feels good," said Max, a 5th grader and member of Beverly's student council.
In all, students from all 10 schools collected more than 3,000 boxes of cereal, which translates to roughly 46,000 meals, Gleaners officials estimated.
"It is a huge help, but unfortunately, it won't last all summer because the need is so great," said Natalie Fotias, Marketing Manager for Gleaners.
"We do love for the kids to get involved and get that 'hunger awareness' at a young age."
You can help too. Until the end of the day Friday, donors can shop online to purchase cereal items, or leave donations via a special website established by Gleaners at any time. Or they can also drop off boxes of cereal in designated areas at any DMC location throughout Metro Detroit, including West Bloomfield and Royal Oak.
