Birmingham Gas Leak Contained: Update
BREAKING: A construction crew hit a gas line in Birmingham, leading to evacuations of nearby offices.

(Updated) BIRMINGHAM, MI — As of 1:30 p.m., the gas main break at the corner of Martin and Bates has been contained, the city said in a news release. The intersection remains closed for crews working on the repair. The Baldwin Public Library and Birmingham City Hall remain closed; all others may return to their businesses.
The leak occurred when a construction crew hit a 1 1/4-inch gas line.
(Patch's earlier report) Consumers Power representatives estimate it will be at least two to three hours before the gas main break is repaired due to excavations in the area surrounding the break.

Marianne Gamboa, a spokeswoman for Birmingham, said in an email that emergency personnel are on the scene of the gas main break at the corner of Martin and Bates. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area.
Gamboa said both the Baldwin Public Library and Birmingham City Hall will be closed until further notice. There will be no interruption in fire and police services.
