Birmingham Student Diagnosed With Chickenpox

A Birmingham student has been diagnosed with chickenpox. District officials warned parents on Tuesday via email.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — A Harlan Elementary School student has been diagnosed with chickenpox. Birmingham School District officials sent an email Tuesday to parents alerting them of the case. Parents were advised to look for symptoms over the next few weeks.

“Chickenpox is a highly-contagious disease that can begin showing symptoms generally within 10-28 days of exposure. The illness generally starts out with a slight fever, followed by a blister-like, itchy rash.
“The email notes that unimmunized students are recommended to be excluded from school for 21 days after the last date of possible exposure. In this particular case, the recommended exclusion period extends to June 27. Wilkinson, however, noted this is the final week of the school year in Birmingham.”
