City Needs Two Residents to Host Japanese Sister City Visitors

Two Shiga delegates coming to Birmingham Sept. 7-11, 2018.

BIRMINGHAM, MI, June 11, 2018 – Birmingham is seeking people who would be interested in hosting a delegate from the City of Birmingham’s Shiga Goodwill Mission, September 7-11, 2018.

What does being a host mean? Here is an outline of the hosting schedule. It may be something you are interested in doing:

Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 - Meet your Japanese guest at a Welcome Ceremony at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Your guest will return home with you and you will plan local activities to take them to do or see (Cranbrook, Meadowbrook, downtown Detroit, etc.)

Friday, Sept. 7 through Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 - During these four days you are responsible for providing lodging and meals for your guest and introducing them to your home community and the state of Michigan.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 - After four days with your Shiga guest, it will be time to accompany them to the Farewell Reception at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI. You and your guest will enjoy lunch and entertainment provided by the Michigan Shiga-Sister State Board before saying final goodbyes.

If you are willing to host, you must submit the Host Family Interest Form by June 15, 2018, online or by U.S. mail. Applicants will receive a confirmation email when their application has been received by the Goodwill Mission committee. In addition, please contact Joellen Haines, assistant to the city manager, to be informed of important details at 248-530-1807 or email: jhaines@bhamgov.org.

“If you’ve never hosted anyone from another country before, this is a great opportunity to share our city firsthand,” said Joe Valentine, Birmingham City Manager. “This is an unique experience to show our sister city guest around the Birmingham area, and to create wonderful memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.”
