Families Enjoy Truck Day at Birmingham's Early Childhood Center
Pre-school children and their families get up close and personal with dozens of trucks, buses and other big vehicles at the Birmingham Early Childhood Center at Midvale School Tuesday.
The parking lot of the Birmingham Early Childhood Center at Midvale School converted into a showroom of sorts Tuesday for students willing to explore some of the largest vehicles in the city Tuesday.
Nearly two dozen trucks, police vehicles and buses were stationed around the lot for children and their families to look at, touch and even jump on during the 10th annual event for two hours.
"He just loves trucks and is having a great time," said Birmingham parent Paul DeAngelis of his 3-year-old son, Luca, who climbed up to the cab of city public works truck without any hesitation Tuesday. "He got to experience this with his older brother a few years ago and has been talking about this for two weeks."
While geared to be fun, the experience is also a great learning opportunity for the students, who are just beginning to grasp the importance of transportation, said  Early Childhood Center's Director Laura Tinsley.Â
"Because of the interest this generates our teachers prepare lessons with a transportation focus," Tinsley said. "It is by far our favorite day of the year."
