Heavy Clothing + Warm Temps = Smash-and-Grab Attempt: Police

A trio dressed in cold-weather clothing on an 80-degree day raised suspicions at a Birmingham jewelry store.

Birmingham, MI — Three people who wore heavy clothing on an 80-degree day raised suspicions at a Birmingham jewelry store and, when apprehended, admitted they had planned to use hammers police found in the vehicle to smash the glass display cases at high-end jewelry stores, police said.

The trio included a 14-year-old boy and 20-year-old woman, both from Detroit, and an 18-year-old man from Warren.

According to an account of the May 27 incident by The Birmingham Eccentric, the group had already left Darakjian Jewelers, 101 Willits Street, when police arrived.

They were seen near Lucido Fine Jewelry, 250 N. Old Woodward Ave., but fled in a Jeep reported stolen from Detroit when they saw police.

According to the report, police didn’t initiate a chase because of heavy traffic in the area, but caught up with the suspects after receiving a report that the vehicle was stopped at a dead-end street.
