Mom Shoves Seaholm Teacher After Daughter Reports Slur on Bus: School

The mother became "very heated" upon hearing her daughter's version of the bus ride altercation, where a racial slur was made.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — A mother of a Seaholm High School student has been banned from school property and will be arrested if she steps foot on the premises after she reportedly shoved a teacher, according to an email to the Seaholm community from Principal Rachel M. Guinn.

The incident first began on Jan. 19 when four Seaholm students were in an altercation on a bus ride back to school following a field trip. Guinn's email alludes that a racial slur was made during the students' exchange.

When the students arrived at school, a mother of one of the students became incensed upon hearing her daughter's version of the events and reportedly shoved a Seaholm teacher. The school immediately called Birmingham police, and both the school and police issued a no trespass warning to the mother, which point blank bans her from school property.

I wanted to write and make you aware of an incident that occurred just at the end of the day today.

Four students were involved in an altercation on a bus ride back to school after a field trip. Additionally, upon entering the building, a parent of one of the students became very heated after hearing her daughter’s side of things and shoved one of our teachers. We called Birmingham Police Department immediately and the police are now reviewing this matter.

Our primary focus is always to ensure that students feel both physically and emotionally safe. To that end, I am very sorry that students had to witness one student alleged to have used racial slurs and a parent taking physical actions that the school neither condones nor supports. Please know that we are working diligently on this matter, and we are investigating this issue as both a physical altercation and one involving racial issues.

In such cases, we will issue a trespass warning jointly with the police department. This has been done. This means that if the parent is on the school premises, we will call the police to make an arrest.

As a school community, we will not tolerate racial slurs nor physical aggression. Rest assured the student code of conduct will be followed with the student, and the parent has been addressed as mentioned, with the Birmingham Police Department. We now need to more completely investigate this matter and work with the students involved to bring resolution.
