'Robbery' Forcing Birmingham School Lockdown a Lie: Police

Realtor's story about armed robbery unraveled when she was unable to explain how she escaped from locked basement, police say.

BIRMINGHAM, MI – A real-estate agent’s robbery claim that caused the lockdown of three Birmingham elementary schools for several hours earlier this month may not have happened, police said.

The three schools were placed on a precautionry lockdown on April 12 after the woman told Birmingham police that she had been robbed in the basement of a home she was showing by a masked intruder who pointed a rifle to her back and demanded her jewelry before locking her in the basemen

Birmingham Police Commander Scott Grewe told The Birmingham Eccentric that police think the story was a fabrication and the investigation has been closed.

Police “investigated her claims and have not found any … to be true and accurate," Grewe told the newspaper.

Grewe said the woman’s story about how she escaped from the locked basement began unraveled, but police don’t have enough evidence to prosecute the woman with making a false police report, Grewe said.
