Seaholm Golfers Take Second in State Tourney

In spite of losing player to graduation, the Seaholm Maples continue to dominate the golf course.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — The Seaholm girls golf team took second place at the Division 2 state finals Oct. 14-15 at Grand Valley State University.

The Birmingham Eccentric reports that this would be the sixth straight season of finishing fourth or better.

Midland Dow won the tournament and was the leader throughout and finished with a score of 645. Seaholm wasn't too far behind with a score of 693 and South Lyon posted a score of 715 to take third place.

"I thought we had a team that could challenge for the state title, but the twins from Dow (Stephanie and Alexis Carras, who finished first and second) obviously got it done and put up spectacular numbers," said Seaholm first-year head coach Matt Pesta, who was an assistant with the team last year. "Going in, I definitely thought we had a chance, so winning a fourth straight (title) was on our minds. But those two from Dow just made it happen for them. It was pretty much impossible to beat them the way they were going."

Coach Pesta told the Birmingham Eccentric that in spite of losing experienced players to graduation, other players picked up where the state champs left off last year.

"We were led by a sophomore and a junior this year and some of our players hadn't even been playing golf all that long. So I think with the group we had going in, it was a great finish for us and they were all very excited."

Hailey Roovers, a sophomore, led the Maples with a 165 and a ninth place finish overall. Cate Joelson, a junior finished second on the team with 168. Olivia Gooch (178), Mary Neal (183) and Emma Whittington (194), all seniors were also on the state tourney team.
