Sunday felt like spring across Michigan, where many areas reported record high temperatures. But winter returns Tuesday with a vengeance.

METRO DETROIT, MI – Fickle Mother Nature is expected to dump about five inches of snow on the area a day after record high temperatures were recorded in many parts of the state on Sunday.

In Metro Detroit, the high temperature Sunday was 68 degrees.

The snow is expected to begin late Monday night and continue through the day on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

A mixture of snow and freezing rain is possible, according to the Weather Service’s hazardous weather statement.

The Tuesday evening commute could be especially dicey with ice- and snow-covered roads.

Here’s the forecast for the rest of the week:

Monday night: A chance of snow showers before 7 p.m., then a chance of snow after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph becoming east northeast after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Tuesday: Snow likely before 11 a.m., then snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet. High near 30. East northeast wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of around 2 inches.

Tuesday night: Snow, mainly before 2 a.m., then a chance of snow showers after 2 a.m. Low around 19. North wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Wednesday: A chance of snow showers before 8 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 27. Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Wednesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 28.

Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31.

Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 20.

Saturday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37.

Saturday night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 41.
