On Wednesday, June 5th the soon to graduate seniors of Brighton High School met for the annual Summa Cum Laude breakfast. Those who achieved a GPA of 3.8 or higher through their high school career were invited to bring parents to the Brighton High School cafeteria in order to celebrate. 130 students were invited this year. Summa cum laude means “with highest honor” in Latin. The breakfast was established to honor those who had the greatest success academically.

“This is like the final academic banquet. It’s different from the sports and other banquets, it’s for those who have achieved the highest level of academic success,” BHS principal Gavin Johnson said.

During the breakfast, every student who attends was given the opportunity to stand in front of their peers and parents and reflect on high school. They told the group what their plans for the future are, such as what university they plan on attending. Almost every college in the state was mentioned. They were encouraged to introduce their parents as a way of honoring them as well.

Each student also had the chance to tell one of their favorite high school memories. Several students mentioned Senior Survivor week, being a part of the musical and Prom. Others had individual stories to share. Pink Week, working at The Paw school store, Powderpuff and DECA Internationals were reflected upon as well.

Later that day the students had their graduation rehearsal. Their graduation will take place at Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center on Saturday, June 8th at 10:00 am. Doors open at 9:00 am to allow more time for newly established safety precautions.
