'I Can't See Him': Sexual Assault Victim Makes Plea To School

A 14-year-old begs the Brighton Board of Eduction to expel her 16-year-old attacker. Another victim warns of widespread abuse.

BRIGHTON, MI – A 14-year-old girl, who along with two other girls were sexually assaulted by another student, made a passionate plea to the Brighton Board of Education on Monday that her attacker be expelled. The boy in October was sentenced to a juvenile facility, but could be back into school as soon as December, according to a report by local media.

The girl appeared at the school board meeting Monday, along with her mother, to insist the district take action against the boy. According to a report in the Livingston Daily, she told the board members:

“It’s my birthday and I’m at a school meeting begging you guys to protect me ....
“If he comes back to school, I’ll have to leave, I don’t want to, but I can’t see him every day.”

The boy is now 16-years-old. He was charged last spring for multiple felonies, including criminal sexual conduct and home invasion, according to the Livingston Daily. Last month, the boy pleaded guilty and was ordered to serve 45 days in a detention facility.

Also at the meeting was another girl who was attacked by the boy. She warned the board members the school system needs to look beyond just the actions of the one boy, but the actions of other children, too. "Sexual games," where boys try to touch girls' butts, are a common scene, the girl told the board.

"They shouldn’t be touching each other in general. It’s the parents’ choice on how to teach and raise, but the school can do something, too.”

The school board took no action on the matters on Monday, according to the Livingston Daily. Board president Andy Burchfield told the meeting's audience the board would not comment on the matter, according to the newspaper.
