Check Out Which Brighton Stores Did Not Sell Tobacco to Minors

In hopes of preventing early addiction to tobacco, Karen Bergbower & Associates (KBA) conducted compliance checks of tobacco retailers in Livingston and Washtenaw Counties in September 2013, according to a press release.

Teens, ages 16 and 17, attempted to purchase cigarettes at 101 selected locations. All the teens were accompanied by law enforcement and citations or warnings were written at the retail locations which sold to the minor.  

The sell rates for Livingston County and Washtenaw County were 33 percent and 14 percent respectively.  

The following are the Brighton retailers who passed the compliance check and did not sell:

• 7-Eleven on Lee Rd
• Beverage Cellar
• Boomers
• Brighton BP Mart
• Brighton Market
• Corrigan BP
• Four Star Amoco, Meijer #46 Gas Station
• Mobil Spencer Rd
• Old 23 Party Store
• Partyville
• Shell I-96
• Sunoco
• Woodland Party Store

Tobacco Compliance Checks are done annually as a requirement of the Synar Amendment. The Synar amendment is a federal mandate that requires States to have laws in place prohibiting the sale and distribution of tobacco products to persons under 18 and to enforce those laws effectively. 

The Michigan Department of Community Health, Office of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care, Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Section and Washtenaw Community Health Organization oversee implementation of the Synar Amendment.
