(BRIGHTON, Michigan)-Never underestimate the power of small businesses. Figures show they create two-thirds of net new jobs and account for 44 percent of U.S. economic activity. Not only are they drivers of the economy, but the people behind them have stories to tell about why it was so important for them to work for themselves. Among their numbers are Rob LaCrosse, a 52-year-old resident of Green Oak Township, who spent 25 years in Corporate America before becoming a franchise owner with Floor Coverings International, visiting customers’ homes in a Mobile Flooring Showroom stocked with thousands of flooring samples from top manufacturers. Having recently launched operations, Floor Coverings International of Huron Valley serves customers throughout Huron Valley and surrounding areas including Fenton, Brighton, Howell and Pinkney.

LaCrosse spent more than two decades working in finance, most recently for a Fortune 500 company. His world – and that of his co-workers – was turned upside down when his company was bought by another. At the time, LaCrosse was responsible for overseeing teams with many long-tenured employees. LaCrosse found his team – and eventually himself – right in the middle of the chaos. “It was a difficult process since I personally hired and trained most of the team. Many of them were with the company for more than 20 years and I knew that my career, as well as theirs, was ending with the company that we loved for many years,” LaCrosse said.

LaCrosse and his co-workers were losing their jobs. Though it was obviously difficult, LaCrosse and his team displayed the utmost professionalism in the day to day handling of their responsibilities right up to the last day. It was during this time that LaCrosse reflected not only on his past, but more importantly, his future. “I was proud of our accomplishments of turning a fledgling company on the brink of bankruptcy into a thriving and financially healthy business that would be sold four times during our time there,” LaCrosse said. “But I decided I did not want to work in a corporate environment any longer. That’s when I decided it was time to go to work for myself.”

Taking a friend’s advice, LaCrosse found a franchise recruiter to help find a good fit for what he was looking for and it was during this process that LaCrosse zeroed in on Floor Coverings International. “I felt there was a connection early on. The more I learned, the more I connected,” LaCrosse said. “It was this connection that pushed me to make the move to buy a Floor Coverings International franchise.”

In Floor Coverings International, LaCrosse found a company that has tripled in size since 2005 by putting a laser focus on consumer buying habits and expressed desires, its impressive operating model, growth ability, marketing, advertising and merchandising. Floor Coverings International further separates itself from the competition through its customer experience, made up of several simple and integrated steps that exceed customers’ expectations. For this, Floor Coverings International was given the Innovation Award for Customer Response from Franchise Update Media, the benchmark publication and conference entity that is the Gold Standard of Franchising.

“I offer a high level of customer service not normally seen in the construction and home improvement fields,” said LaCrosse, who worked for a construction company before entering the finance industry. “My willingness to meet and exceed customers’ expectations is second to none, while my construction background will ensure the project is done correctly and my business background will help to make every customer’s project as cost efficient as possible.”

LaCrosse couldn’t be happier embarking on this newest chapter of his professional career and he’s especially excited about having something to pass on to his four daughters.

“I believe in small business. We have always tried to support small businesses in our community,” LaCrosse said. “It’s my hope that my daughters are eventually employed in the business with the hope that someday they will take the reins of the business and move it to the next generation.”
