Chelsea High senior Matthew Weisberg, will sign a letter of intent to compete for Midland University next week. Weisberg, who tops the national rankings for his weight class, plans to attend the Fremont, Nebraska school which has offered him a full athletic scholarship. When Weisberg heads off to campus next fall, he won’t be alone - one of his closest friends, a powerlifter from Ionia, has also received a full scholarship and signed his own letter of intent Tuesday, Dec 19.
Shane Nutt told the Ionia Sentinel-Standard that the two became friends despite Nutt breaking one of Weisberg’s lifting records. The student athletes intend to share a dorm room in Nebraska, and Nutt says the pair will be unstoppable in competition. “We are going to be dominant next year,” Nutt told the Sentinel-Standard, adding “I’m really excited to be a part of their team.” In 2015, Weisberg set a state record while competing for the Chelsea Bulldogs last year, with a deadlift of 625 pounds.
