Chelsea High School Theatre Guild presents “Xanadu"

80's Cult Classic Expands Boundaries for Chelsea High School

The Chelsea High School Theatre Guild presents their fall musical “Xanadu” at the Chelsea High School Auditorium, November 9th and 10th.

“Xanadu” is the musical adaptation of the 80s cult classic movie starring Olivia Newton-John. In it, a Greek muse (Clio) goes undercover as a mortal by the name of Kira to inspire artists, particularly Sonny Malone, a struggling artist in L.A. Unfortunately, Kira and Sonny fall in love— something forbidden by the gods of Olympus. What will happen to Kira and Sonny, especially when Kira’s ill-meaning sisters come into play?

Paige Conway, the director and choreographer of the musical, has worked on “Xanadu” multiple times, but found pleasant surprises in a new adaptation. “What I’m most excited about for this one is this is the first time that I’ve been able to do it with a group that’s basically going to be on [roller] skates the whole show.”

Audiences can expect a new kind of show, too, apart from the roller skates. Since the musical “Xanadu” is a spoof of the original, there’s a new style that isn’t seen often in high schools. “High schools don’t get to work with this too much,” Conway said. “We’re really pushing our spectrum that we’re working on.”

Madilynn O’Hara, the lead in the show, loves the new challenge of playing Kira. “I get to be super goofy on stage. I’m not a naturally coordinated person… it’s a challenge, but it’s fun.”
