This week, Chelsea Police found a wallet and located a suspect in a hit-and-run. Check out the latest from local law enforcement.

Lost Wallet

On Jan. 30 at 1:35 p.m, a wallet was brought to the Chelsea Police Department. The women’s leather pocketbook or wallet was found on a sidewalk. The citizen who found the wallet decided to bring it to the police for safekeeping. There was a driver’s license in the wallet, indicating its owner lives in Troy. So far, police have not been able to identify a phone number for the owner of the wallet.

Hit and Run

Jan. 30 at 2:20pm, a Chelsea officer was called to the 1100 block of South Main Street after a hit-and-run was reported in a parking lot there. The vehicle responsible for the hit-and-run fled the scene and is described as an older model Dodge Ram with tool boxes in the truckbed. After conducting a canvass, police found surveillance footage of the crash and got a clear image of the driver of the vehicle that left the scene and its driver. Police say they contacted the driver, a 60-year-old Grass Lake man, for his side of the story. Police have sent a warrant request to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and are asking for a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash.

Identity Theft

Jan. 31. At 11:30 a.m., A woman called Chelsea Police to report that her identity had been stolen used to open a brokerage account in her name. The victim said she did not apply for the account and does not know who might have done so. The account is now closed and the case will remain closed unless any further information about the suspect becomes available.

On Feb. 1 ad 4:46 p.m., A woman visited the Chelsea Police Department to report she had been contacted by a financial institution about a newly-opened credit card account in her name. The complainant does not know how her information was compromised, and could not offer any information about potential suspect(s). She believes her information may have been obtained online. The case is closed and will remain so unless information about the suspect(s) comes to light.
