City Council: Block Grant Plans, American Legion Award, Halloween Costume Winners

City Council on Tuesday approved the programming of the Community Development Block Grant the city receives each year from Oakland County. The grant funds programs and projects that help low-income residents, Mayor Penny Luebs explained.

The amount of money each city receives is based on the low-income population, Luebs said. Clawson will receive $34,778 in 2012 and possibly allocate it to transportation for the and a city sidewalk replacement program. In the past, the city has used the money to fund domestic violence programs and large-print books for low-income families. The city will not be authorized to spend the funds until June. 

American Legion Honored

City Council presented an award to the for its work in the Wounded Warriors Project. The Clawson post raised $3,500 at a fundraiser in September to help wounded veterans in Michigan. In the next month or so, the American Legion plans to start a collection of hats, gloves and coats for homeless veterans.

Costume Contest Winners

The City Council recognized and awarded all the winners of the costume contest from the City Halloween Party on Monday.

• The winners from the age 2 and under group are Owen Bell (1st place), Laura Lanham (2nd place) and Kyle Lindsey (3rd place)
• In the age 3-5 group the winners are Joey Maddock (1st), Darren Dell (2nd) Thomas Jablonski (3rd)
• Age 6-8 group the winners are Johnny Purugganan (1st), Allison Jablonski (2nd) and Andre Henderson (3rd)
• Age 9-12 group the winners are Blake Haney (1st), Matthew Cramer (2nd) and Hannah Jablonski (3rd)
• Age 13 and up group the winners are Eric Birth (1st), Ashley Anderson (2nd) and Rachel Jablonski (3rd).
