Clawson Students Exceed State Averages in MEAP Exam
The percentage of students considered proficient in some subjects has dropped.

Clawson students scored above the state average in most subjects on the fall 2011 MEAP exams, but overall, there was a drop in those who met or exceeded expectations for reading, math, social studies, science and writing, according to figures released by the Michigan Department of Education on Wednesday.
In the Clawson School District, between 56.3 and 75.4 percent of third- through eighth-graders met or exceeded expectations for reading. For math, between 26.1 and 52.1 percent of third- through eighth-graders were proficient.
Superintendent Cheryl Rogers said she will provide a response from the district after reviewing all the results.

The cut scores — the passing scores that distinguish between whether a student is advanced, proficient, partially proficient or not proficient in certain subjects — were adopted by the State Board of Education in September 2010. With the more rigorous cut scores this time around, students need to get roughly 65 percent of the answers correct to “pass” the state test, instead of 39 percent that was the previous benchmark.
