Community Shaken Up by Recent String of Burglaries and Arrest
Police urge residents to be watchdogs in their neighborhoods.

A string of recent burglaries, and  in Clawson has shaken up some residents in this small, quiet town. While Clawson police say they may have caught the person, they are still urging residents to be vigilant.
"Residents should stay alert and continue to call police when they see (suspicious) people in their neighborhood," Clawson Detective Lt. Scott Sarvello said.
When there is a crime spree, there's usually one person or group responsible, police said.

The increase in home invasions has been nerve-wracking for residents such as Carrie Chambers, who is raising three children in Clawson. "It makes you freak out a little bit," Chambers said. "It makes you wonder if we need more officers on the streets."
Chambers said the recent crimes have been the talk of her northwest Clawson neighborhood. Some residents have even discussed organizing neighborhood watch groups, she said.

"I think it's one of those things where we need people to be aware of what’s going on and be more cautious," said Chambers, adding that her family is considering getting a dog to help watch the house.
On Tuesday, the quick action of a resident lead police to the arrest of David Marsh, who has so far been charged in one home invasion on the 200 block Manitou. That resident called police when he saw a suspicious man walking through his yard.
Resident Eva Burns said she is taking extra precautions lately, securing her home and watching out for suspicious activity in her neighborhood.
"You kind of get to know cars and you kind of get to know who's in the neighborhood," Burns said.
Chambers and Burns said the economic recession could be a factor in the recent burglaries. "It’s a whole different world we are living in," Burns said. "You’ve got so many people unemployed that you gotta keep your eyes open."
All of the burglaries in the past two months happened between 6 a.m.-6 p.m.Â
Burns' husband, Tim, said neighbors should especially stick together because about half of the residents are away at work during the day. "We try to keep an open eye all the time," Tim Burns said.
Many readers on the Clawson Patch Facebook page were relieved to hear a suspect was arrested this week.
"That makes me happy. I've been very nervous leaving my house lately! Thankfully I have good watchful neighbors," Michelle Shields posted on Facebook.
"Thank you watchful citizen," Ken Case posted.
Tips to stay safe
To help residents remain safe during the holiday season, Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson has a list of tips for protecting your house and yourself when out shopping.
"Most criminals are opportunists, in that they watch for victims to take advantage of," Anderson's safety guide said. "If people plan ahead with the knowledge that they are being watched, their actions can help them to avoid being a victim."
Here are a few of his tips:
- Make sure the exterior doors and windows are locked when you leave your home.Â
- If you are going to be gone at night, turn on a light inside your house before you leave.Â
- When you arrive at the store or mall, park your vehicle in a well-lighted area. Lock your vehicle when you leave it and avoid leaving valuable items in sight.Â
- Electronics such as cell phones, laptops computeres, GPS units, iPods or similar items are targets of theft. Put your valuables in the trunk if possible, but avoid doing so where others can see.
- Try to avoid shopping alone; there is safety in numbers.
- If you notice someone following you, go to a busy place; seek out the help of a police officer or security guard. If someone approaches you, make a lot of noise and get away.
- When you return home, continue be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone or something suspicious around your house, call 911. Stay secure in your vehicle until the police arrive.
If you see any suspicious behavior, police ask that you dial 911 for immediate response. If you have information or tips on the recent burglaries, call 248-524-3477.
