15 Mile Reopens After Sewer Collapse

After being closed for nearly a year, 15 Mile in Macomb County reopened Tuesday.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Nearly a year after it closed due to the massive sinkhole in Macomb County, 15 Mile Road reopened Tuesday. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held by Macomb County officials to mark the road’s reopening.

“We finished ahead of schedule and under budget,” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller said in a Facebook post. “That’s as good as it gets in government work.”

Last December, a giant sinkhole was created when a below ground interceptor failed. The sinkhole ran along 15 Mile Road between Utica and Hayes roads.

About 500,000 Macomb County residents were impacted by the interceptor failure, which occurred on Christmas Eve 2016, the Detroit Free Press reported. About two dozen families were displaced and several homes were condemned.

The repair project began immediately after the collapse. A budget of $75 million was established. County officials said the road's reopening was the last phase of the repair program.

Officials faced a possible setback in August when nine feet of sewage — some 1.5 million gallons — filled the trench being used to repair the 15 Mile Road sewer collapse. No injuries occurred from the sewage and county officials were able to maintain the repair schedule.
