3 New Coronavirus Outbreaks Reported In Macomb County Schools

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Three schools in Macomb County were included on a list of locations where new outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported, the state said Monday.

According to state officials, three people at Pinewood Elementary School in Warren have tested positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, two students at Anchor Bay High School in Ira and two students at Romeo High School in Romeo also have tested positive for the coronavirus.

In total, 27 new outbreaks were reported in Michigan schools Monday.

Three Macomb County schools also are among sites of ongoing outbreaks of the coronavirus, according to state health data.

Miami Elementary School in Clinton Township has been the site of an ongoing outbreak since Oct. 12, when the state reported that two staff members had tested positive for the coronavirus.

St. Lawrence Catholic School in Utica an Clinton Valley Elementary School in Mount Clemons also were added to the list Oct. 12. Four students at St. Lawrence and three staff at Clinton Valley previously tested positive for the coronavirus.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
