5 New Coronavirus Outbreaks Reported In Macomb County Schools

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Five schools in Macomb County are among sites where new outbreaks of the coronavirus were reported by state health officials Monday.

Three people are Sugarbush Elementary School in Chesterfield have tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said.

Two students at Iroquois Middle School in Macomb tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the state. Also in Macomb, five students at Dakota High School tested positive for the virus, the state said.

Mount Clemons Middle School had two people test positive for the virus, the state reported.

Two students at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the state.

Six Macomb County schools were also included on the state's list of ongoing coronavirus outbreaks.

Three staff at Clinton Valley Elementary School in Mount Clemons previously tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said Oct. 12.

Miami Elementary School in Clinton Township previously had two staff test positive for the coronavirus, according to the state on Oct. 12.

In Warren, three people at Pinewood Elementary School tested positive for the virus, the state said Oct. 19.

Four students at St. Lawrence Catholic School in Utica previously tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said Oct. 12.

Two staff at Anchor Bay High School in Ira previously tested positive for the virus, the state said Oct. 19.

In Romeo, six Romeo High School students previously tested positive for the coronavirus, the state reported Oct. 19.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
